BIFL Mechanical pencil for students?
Graphgear 500 mechanical pencil. The one on top I’ve used for 20 years, the other is brand new.
I have been using my Pentel GraphGear 1000 daily for 6 years now. Not a single problem. I bought two of them originally and I still have not used the second one. Don’t buy cheap mechanical pencils. This thing is a beast and is only about $15. I am going to likely buy the 0.5mm, and 0.3mm versions.
Pentel TwistErase 0.7mm mechanical pencil - Made in Japan. 4+ years of engineering school and still as good as the day I bought it.

The Platinum Pro Use 2 is about as BIFL as it gets. A proper mechanical pencil will outlast you (this one is only a few years old, but shows zero wear), and costs less than $20. These pencils are all metal, ergonomic, and beautiful. I prefer Platinum and Pentel.
Cheap mechanical pencils need some love, too! Had these for over five years now and had been with me through countless assignments, notes and exams.
